New Stamps! Malaysian Antarctic Research Programme/ Program Penyelidikan Antartika Malaysia

On the 8th of March, 2012, my family and I went to the Kuala Lumpur main post office in Dayabumi Complex for the launch of the new stamps, Malaysian Antarctic Research Programme/ Program Penyelidikan Antartika Malaysia.

The stamps are to mark the working visit of the 13th Yang DiPertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billal Shah to             from the 20th untill the 23rd of November, 2011. This visit marked the royal recognition on the efforts and important contribution of research carried out by Malaysian scientists in Antartica.

The First Day cover.

The 60 sen stamps feature an aerial view of the Antarctic continent, a Malaysian flag and a scenic view near Ross Island, Antarctica.

The 60sen stamp.

The 90 sen setenant stamps feature an aerial view of the world. Malaysia is the only ASEAN and Muslim country with an active polar research program.

Its pair features an Emperor penguin (which is the biggest of all living penguins) and a flock of Adelie penguins. There is also a picture of an MARP atmospheric scientist setting up a Global Positioning System to study interactions between the upper atmosphere and space weather. The microscoptic picture is a yeast endemic to Antarctica isolated from sea ice by MARP microbiologists who are studying the cold adaption mechanism of Antarctic microbes.
